Babylon Falling Tour: Thievery Corporation Returns to the Tabernacle!

Now if you have followed Concerthopper, or even just my column over the years, you may have noticed the diversity that we all have with our music tastes. Many musical genres are explored at Concerthopper in hopes that we can help promote new music to our readers and rightfully so because music is what makes people happy, sad, excited, anxious, motivated, and well you get the point. One of my favorite groups to see live has always been Thievery Corporation. So when they announced the Babylon Falling Tour would stop at the Tabernacle (Atlanta), you know I would be there just like the last time they played in 2017. Thievery Corporation first started off as the brain child from the brilliant minds of Rob Garza (bass, keyboards, guitar, and production) and Eric Hilton (guitar, bass, keyboards, and percussion) when they formed this incredible friendship over the summer of 1995.

Their mutual love for dub music, jazz records, bossa nova, and the club life helped steer them to start mixing all of these influences into recording. The musicianship that each member of their touring/studio band/vocalists is also something not to take lightly. The touring band consists of Jeff Franca (drums), Rob Myers (sitar/guitar), Frank Orrall (percussion/drums/vocals), Ashish “Hash” Vyas (bass), Natalia Clavier (vocals), Loulou Ghelichkhani (vocals), Shana Halligan (vocals), Racquel Jones (vocals), Mr. Lif (vocals), Notch (vocals), and last but definitely not the least there is Puma (vocals). Now that is a lot of people to tour with and share personal space, so you know each member of the band most definitely considers each other a part of their acquired musical family.

Thievery Corporation seemed to always outdo themselves every time that I have seen them perform in the past. Each time they vividly performed various tracks from their extensive discography that features ten note-worthy (10) LPs, numerous singles, and don’t forget the various compilations that they have been featured on as well. Seeing them perform is almost a religious experience as you relish in the marvel that is Thievery Corporation. They seamlessly played “Lebanese Blonde”, “Babylon Falling”, “Fight to Survive”, “The Heart’s a Lonely Hunter”, and “Culture of Fear” to name a very select few. Feeling that FOMO yet? Head on over to Thievery Corporation’s Official Tour page and see what date you are able to see them perform live! Want to hear some of Thievery Corporation for yourself? No problem! Now I want to preface that I was not able to shoot during Karl’s set but I did want to discuss him so in my review. Karl Denson is a funk/jazz saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist who hails from Santa Ana, California and has been active on the music scene since 1989. Karl started off as a member of Lenny Kravitz’s band and has went on to play with many various artists including Blind Boys of Alabama, Blackalicious, and Dave Holland to name a few. Denson has twenty-three (23) LPs under his discography that includes any work he has done with other artists such as Lenny Kravitz fro example. Currently, Karl is touring with his band, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, as the opening support for Thievery Corporation on their Babylon Falling Tour.
