Atlanta Plays Host to a Unique Night of Metal With Apocalyptica and Lacuna Coil on the Cell-O Tour

The Masquerade in Atlanta recently played host to one of the most unique experiences in heavy metal as the city was the first stop on a tour that featured Lacuna Coil and Apocalyptica. The passion for this lineup was obvious as, two hours before the show fans were already lining up the stairs at the venue waiting for the doors to open. ConcertHopper was there amongst them, ready to offer our take on the evening and how it all went down.

As the venue filled to capacity in Heaven, so much so that the balcony was opened, there was a dull roar of excitement from the fans packed in for the evening. The dull roar soon erupted to a cacophony as the lights went down in the venue. Moments later, the Italian goth metal group Lacuna Coil strode onto the stage. From the onset, the band was powerful, the haunting, near operatic vocals of Cristina Scabbia juxtaposed against the gravelly tones of Andrea Ferro. All of this played out in a very theatrical fashion as the band members donned corpse paint and Cristina and Andrea had special effects make up on that made them appear bloody and scarred. Seeing the performance in person reminded us why the band won the Golden Gods Award for Best Live Act in 2018 and with more than 20 years of history and music behind them, the band continues showing the world how it’s done.

After a pause between the two bands’ sets that was actually quite nice, this allowed time for fans to make their way out of Heaven to grab a bite to eat from the taco vendor or to smoke as desired. Then it was time for everyone to witness one of the most unique spectacles we’ve ever had the chance to witness in metal. The setup seems quite simple at first glance, just a drum set, and a few microphone stands were visible on the stage as the lights went down. Soon, three men brandishing only cellos and having made their way all of the way from Finland began their quest to blow the Atlanta crowd away. It’s quite an interesting experience as traditionally the band has either done pure covers of songs by bands like Metallica, Pantera, Sepultura and others or played original songs with guest vocals from some of metal royalty including Corey Taylor of Slipknot, Adam Gontier of Three Day’s Grace at the time and more. Of course, all of these artists don’t make it out for the tour, but this doesn’t stop the performance from being amazing and a spectacle to witness. Plus, you haven’t truly lived until you have seen someone windmill headbang while wailing away on a cello.

With Atlanta being the first stop of the tour, there are a host of other opportunities to see this tour in person. Additionally, the bands will be appearing later in the year at Virginia’s Blue Ridge Rock Festival. The show is absolutely worth the price of the ticket, barely over $25 in Atlanta on the day of the show, so if you live near one of the upcoming cities, we strongly encourage you to make time to check it out.
