They Might Be Giants - Night Two at The Eastern (10/25/2025)
They Might Be Giants (TMBG) is an innovative alternative rock/art rock/power pop/geek rock/children’s music band from Brooklyn, New York that has been active since 1982. They Might Be Giants consist of founding members John Flansburgh (vocals/guitars/bass) and John Linnell (vocals/accordion/keyboards/woodwinds), in addition we have their current touring band: Dan Miller (guitar/keyboards/backing vocals), Danny Weinkauf (bass/keyboards), Marty Beller (drums/percussion), Dan Levine (trombone/euphonium/tuba), Stan Harrison (saxophones/clarinet/bass clarinet/flute), and Mark Pender (trumpet). Since 1986, They Might Be Giants has released a massive twenty-three (23) LPs, thirteen (13) compilations, twelve (12) live albums, fifteen (15) EPs, and thirty-one (31) singles. They Might Be Giants’ latest release, Book, was released on November 12, 2021, via their own record label, Idlewild Recordings.
It is also worth noting over They Might Be Giants’ storied career, they have been nominated for three (3) Grammy Awards and taken home two (2) Grammy’s for Best Song Written for Visual Media – “Boss of Me” from the hit Fox television show Malcolm in the Middle (2002) and Best Musical Album for Children – Here Comes the 123s (2009). Yes, you read that correctly, They Might Be Giants has also been recognized for their marvelous work in the children's music category. Book was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Boxset or Special Limited-Edition Package.
They Might Be Giants announced late last year via their social media accounts that they would embark on The Big Tour, starting off on February 27th in Orlando, Florida, and culminating on June 15th in Seattle, Washington. Lucky for Atlanta, two dates were originally scheduled for this tour stop on March 28th and March 29th at The Eastern. I knew this They Might Be Giants tour would be one of the most unforgettable tours in 2025, so I knew Concerthopper needed some coverage. Not long before the scheduled date in Atlanta, They Might Be Giants needed to postpone some scheduled tour dates which included the Atlanta tour stops.
Thankfully, They Might Be Giants were able to reschedule these tour stops quickly, plus add some new tour stops in St. Louis, Denver, Covington, Lincoln, and Omaha, to name a few cities. And what is great about this tour with They Might Be Giants is that it is considered an “Evening with” performance with an eight-piece band, two sets, and no opening act. What more can a die-hard fan of They Might Be Giants ask for? I mean, this is a solid reason why so many tour dates have been selling out on this tour.
Kicking off Saturday’s performance, They Might Be Giants came out on stage for their second night at The Eastern, where many devoted fans gleefully attended both nights. Flansburgh told the crowd that they would be performing a lot of material in the first set from their fifth (5) studio album, John Henry. I remember when this album came out in 1994, I had some favorites off this album, so I was hoping to hear “Snail Shell”, “Out of Jail”, “AKA Driver (aka “NyQuil Driver”), “Dirt Bike”, and “The End of the Tour”. The first two songs of the night were “Subliminal” and “Snail Shell”, which are also the first two songs on John Henry, so I knew a lot of the fans were delighted with this start. They Might Be Giants even treated the fans to some other classic songs like “The Darlings of Lumberland” and “Stuff is Way” from their sixteenth (16) studio album Nanobots, which was released in 2013.
Now, full disclosure, I checked out Friday’s setlist and was saddened to see that both “Particle Man” and their famous cover of The Four Lads’ song, “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” were already performed. I was prepared that I would not get the chance to hear these songs performed during the second night. Much to my surprise, to start the second set, both Flansburgh and Linnell came out on stage alone with instruments in hand to perform “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).” I know that I was not the only happy person in the venue, since this was my first time seeing They Might Be Giants, I was overcome with joy getting to hear all of these songs from my youth.
The second set also had a few choice cuts off their (3) studio album, Flood, which was released in 1990. Flood was the first album that introduced me to the magic of They Might Be Giants, so songs like “Istanbul (Not Constantinople”, “Birdhouse in Your Soul”, and “Particle Man” bring back many fond memories. They Might Be Giants even added some newer songs from their album, Book, like “Brontosaurus”, “Moonbeam Rays”, and “Synopsis for Latecomers” to their second set. As I was walking around the venue during both sets, I witnessed so many smiling faces singing and dancing along to the music. Even folks dressed up in various cosplay outfits as a nod to the band’s rich history. It was nice to see so many people enjoying themselves as They Might Be Giants flawlessly performed a little bit of everything from their enormous discography.
