My Morning Jacket is On Tour: Fox Theatre Edition

You might recall a few years back, My Morning Jacket made my column with their tour, It Still Moves 20th Anniversary Show Live at the Fox Theatre! Well, the boys are back in Atlanta touring in support of their latest release, Is, and also to celebrate another historic milestone in their storied musical career: the 20th Anniversary of Z.

Z is their fourth (4) studio album, and was released in 2005. The tour, My Morning Jacket is On Tour, started in Bend, Oregon, at the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, on August 5th and concluded in Atlanta with two shows on Halloween night, October 31st, and the following day, November 1st, at the fabulous Fox Theatre.

Touring with My Morning Jacket as opening support for this tour are Melt, BALTHVS, and Babehoven, who all lend a hand during select dates. For the Atlanta dates, BALTHVS will open on 10/31, and Babehoven will take the opening slot on 11/01. And I was fortunate enough to cover both nights for Concerthopper. Many thanks to My Morning Jacket, BALTHVS, Babehoven, the friendly staff at the Fox Theatre, and the amazing people at Big Hassle for their support.

BALTHVS (pronounced English: bôl + thus/Spanish: Bal + tus) is a psychedelic funk/indie rock/psychedelic rock band from Bogotá, Colombia that formed in 2019. BALTHVS consists of Balthazar Aguirre (guitar/vocals), Johanna Mercuriana (bass/vocals), and Santiago Lizcano (drums/vocals). BALTHVS has released five (5) LPs, three (3) EPs, five (5) compilations, and one (1) live album since 2020. Third Vibration (2023) is their latest album and is available for download or purchase via this link. This was my first time seeing BALTHVS perform, and I was excited to get this opportunity to check them out.

BALTHVS came out on stage dressed up for Halloween, and you could tell they were excited to perform at such a historic venue in Atlanta with My Morning Jacket. About midway through their set, BALTHVS performed “Vapor Waves” > “Mood Swings” > “All is One”, and I have to say that this was a solid back-to-back-to-back choice of tunes for this evening. BALTHVS shook the crowd into a frenzy of dancing and smiles venue-wide as I walked the venue during the set. BALTHVS ended their night with the final track, “Eclipse Solar,” off their 2022 LP, Cause & Effect, and this was the perfect song to wrap their set with. BALTHVS’ vibe filled the room with love and tranquility as they happily jammed out to “Eclipse Solar” as the crowd just danced away.

Now we were all ready for My Morning Jacket to take the stage and see what the band dressed up as for Halloween. What I did not have on the My Morning Jacket bingo card was not one, not two, not three, but four fantastic covers from Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne that included starting off the night with a dark and brooding, rock’n’roll rendition of “Black Sabbath.” You could see the hardcore Jacket fans in the front pit section enjoying life and rocking out to their favorite band on Halloween. My Morning Jacket also mixed in “Fairies Wear Boots” from Black Sabbath between their fan-favorite song “Run Thru.” Keeping this lovely Halloween theme alive, after the performance of “Spring (Among the Living),” My Morning Jacket continued into playing an Ozzy Osbourne tribute with an interpolation of the classic song, “Mama, I’m Coming Home.”

And of course, you know My Morning Jacket came back to give the crowd a mind-blowing encore, and what an encore it was! After nailing songs like “Strangulation” and “The Dark,” Jim James belted out the unforgettable beginning of the Ozzy Osbourne hit “Crazy Train.” Well, it’s a given that the crowd went ballistic as My Morning Jacket debuted their spin of this classic Ozzy Osbourne track from the album Blizzard of Ozz. Closing out the evening, My Morning Jacket gave the crowd one last song before departing. The intro to “One Big Holiday” started to play, and you could see the crowd start to jump up and down to the beat of this beloved song.

Babehoven is an indie rock duo currently based in Hudson, New York, that formed in 2018. Babehoven consists of Maya Bon (guitars/vocals) and Ryan Albert (guitar). Babehoven has released one (1) compilation album, one (1) demo, three (3) EPs, and two (2) LPs since 2018. Babehoven is gearing up for a European tour with Frankie Cosmos that kicks off on November 15th in Dublin, Ireland, and concludes on November 25th in Berlin, Germany.

Babehoven started Night 2 with “Break the Ice” off their 2022 release, Light Moving Time. The crowd was gifted a few brilliant songs from their 2024 release, Water’s Here in You: “Birdseye”, “Chariot”, and one of my favorites, “Cherry”. What the crowd did not know was that Babehoven would also debut a few unreleased tracks halfway through their set. Let us hope there is a new album coming soon with the emergence of this new material. Babehoven treated the fans, so let us hope there is a new album coming soon with the emergence of this new material.

My Morning Jacket commenced their second night at the Fox Theatre with a mix of wicked good songs from their back catalog that included several bangers ike “Circuital,” “Compound Fracture,” “Mahgeetah,” “Golden,” and a superb cover of “Head Over Heels” by the group Tears for Fears. I was thrilled to hear My Morning Jacket perform “Half a Lifetime” and “Everyday Magic” from their latest release, Is. This album has grown on me after a few spins, and those two songs are a few of my favorite tracks from Is.

Now it was time for what we all were waiting for… the celebration of the album Z in its entirety. This is one of my favorite albums by My Morning Jacket, and I was excited to hear “Wordless Chorus,” “Off the Record,” “Gideon,” and the final song off the album, “Dondante.” The crowd was singing along to each song as My Morning Jacket flawlessly performed Z during the last date of this current tour. You could tell My Morning Jacket was feeding off the crowd’s enthusiastic participation, and vice versa.

Knowing that this would be the last encore of the tour, I was curious what My Morning Jacket would come back out to perform. My Morning Jacket started their encore with an oldie but goodie. To be honest, I am not sure I have heard My Morning Jacket perform “Hopefully” off their second studio album, At Dawn, before this evening. My Morning Jacket even added a beautiful cover of Bob Weir’s “One More Saturday Night” right before closing out the tour with the second track off It Still Moves, “Dancefloors.”

Having the opportunity to witness both It Still Moves and Z anniversary tours in the past few years, I’m excited about the chance for a 20th anniversary tour for Evil Urges in 2028. And next year, maybe we get lucky with a 15th anniversary tour for My Morning Jacket’s sixth album, Circuital.
