Atreyu makes a stop at The Masquerade to Baptize Atlanta!

ConcertHopper recently found ourselves back at Heaven at The Masquerade in Atlanta to attend the Baptize tour featuring Atreyu, Crown the Empire, Tetrarch, Saul and Defying Decay. The venue was packed and the crowd was anxious for the show that was to come. We shared their sympathies.

First to the stage was Defying Decay who hail from the Philippines. With a unique blending of bands like the Deftones with what others might classify as an “emo” type sound, the band crushed their set and were extremely energetic on stage. At one point, their bass player was even in the crowd moshing while playing. Unbeknownst to the crowd at the time, their original vocalist had to return to the Philippines due to family emergency and the photographer for Atreyu, Anthony had to fill in on vocals, he did a phenomenal job.

Next to take the stage was Iowa’s Saul. The band started gaining traction thanks to heavy rotation on Sirius XM and from there launched into full touring mode. They list bands ranging from Tool to Pearl Jam as influences. Their set was a beautiful amalgamation of a range of genres in heavy music that had the pace of the show flowing beautifully.

Atlanta natives Tetrarch were next to the stage. They are a band that has rapidly been growing in popularity lately and also have benefitted from heavy rotation on Sirius XM. They set a heavy and aggressive tone to their set and it’s all framed by guitarist Diamond’s blazing riffs. They seem to approach music with a chip on their shoulder which gives them an amazing live presence where they give their all.

Setting the stage prior to Atreyu’s headlining set was Crown the Empire. Their set was incredible and there was a ton of crowd interaction as well. At one point, vocalist Andy Leo Rockhold requested that someone from the crowd bring a shot up to the band. Shortly after there were nine shots along the stage and the band was pouring shots to each other mid song. They energy was lively and you could see the passion evident in the band, the crowd returned this energy in kind.

Atreyu was there to close the night out with an amazing set. They played an awesome mixture of their classics and of course, songs off of the new album. There were a couple of cool concepts that happened during the Atreyu set. One was that they had a bowl filled with songs off of the new album and they let someone from the crowd draw a piece of paper from the bowl to determine which of their new songs they would play, for Atlanta it was “Weed”. The entire Atreyu set was also streamed live on Twitch which a lot of bands are starting to do now following Trivium’s blueprint and it works out great for fans who want a concert experience without being able to attend.

The good part for Atlanta is that the city’s stop for this tour was early in the touring cycle so Atlanta got all of the bands while they were fresh. That being said, I’m certain the energy will persist through the rest of this tour.
