20 Books That Will Make You Put Down Your Phone

book-list.jpg

I decided we should start a trend at music festivals and concerts this year: reading. Hear me out. One of my goals for 2017 is to spend less time staring at my phone, something I think we are all guilty of, but what's a concert hopper to do while waiting for the next set to start? Okay, okay I know making new friends or people watching are the best options, but reading a book is a better than trying to get enough signal to load a "how-to" video on Facebook. Besides book reading seems to be a conversation starter, "Whatcha reading?" is a polite enough question. While having a stranger look down at your phone and ask what you're looking at, is weird. Rant over, listed below are our picks for light music related reading. First things first, if you want to pack less consider getting a Kindle, so all your new books will be at your finger tips.

A few of my favorites...

1. I Was There: Gigs That Changed the World by Mark Paytress

2. High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

3. Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story by Chuck Klosterman

Not music related, but it was a good read on the way to Pilgrimage. Like memes that don't use up your data or battery life.

4. Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Andersen

On my "to read" list... (Also my Christmas list. hint, hint) If you have read any of these let me know what you think of them. I'm trying to decide which one to pick up first.

5. Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad

6. Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl by Carrie Brownstein

7. Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution by Sara Marcus

8. How to Write About Music: Excerpts from the 33 1/3 Series, Magazines, Books and Blogs with Advice from Industry-leading Writers Edited by Marc Woodworth and Ally-Jane Grossan

9. Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (33 1/3) by Kirk Walker Graves

10. Nine Inch Nails' Pretty Hate Machine (33 1/3) by Daphne Carr

11. Cash by Johnny Cash

12. Coal Miner’s Daughter by Loretta Lynn

13. Decoded by Jay Z

Okay so I asked avid reader and concert hopper, Christine for more suggestions and of course we had to expand this list.

"Seriously THE greatest book I've ever read about the punk movement, particularly in the UK. It was a long read, but totally worth it."

15. Fool the World: The Oral History of a Band Called Pixies by Josh Frank

16. Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen

17. Talking to Girls About Duran Duran: One Young Man's Quest for True Love and a Cooler Haircut by Rob Sheffield

Now this list would not be complete without some books about The Beatles.

18. You Never Give Me Your Money: The Beatles After the Breakup by Peter Doggett

19. Beatleology: A Magical Mystery Tour to Discover Your Inner Beatle by Adam Jaquette, Roger Jaquette

Let's finish this list off with the WINNER OF THE NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE.

20. Chronicles: Volume One by Bob Dylan
